VE Day!

12th December 2018

On Monday 10th December, Year 5 and 6 participated in History Day where we continued our learning about World War II, in particular, VE Day. VE Day, also known as Victory in Europe Day, was 8th May 1945. This was when Germany signed an unconditional surrender and Winston Churchill was able to announce to Great Britain that the war in Europe was over. People nation wide rejoiced in the streets. They sang and danced the day and night away. There were flags and bunting flying and thousands upon thousands of people gathered in front of Buckingham Palace to see the…

Lyric Hammersmith theatre

5th December 2018

On Tuesday, Year 6 walked to the Lyric Hammersmith theatre to watch a pantomime performance of Dick Whittington. The story was about a young man named Dick Whittington, who moved to London from Cardiff. He was a very kind and trusting man, unlike the people of London. Meanwhile, the mayor of London was stepping down from his role and it was suggested that Dick would be the perfect person to replace him in order for London to become wonderful and friendly again. Queen Rat, however, wanted the role for herself and wanted London to become even nastier. We won’t give…

Rationing and Propaganda

21st November 2018

This week in History lessons, Year 5 and 6 have been learning about rationing and propaganda in WWII. Before the war, much of Britain’s food was imported from other countries and came to us via ships. During the war, the German submarines were bombing those ships, so importing food was no longer an option. Therefore, Britons had to ration their food strictly during the war in order for supplies to not run out.  There were many foods rationed during this time: meat, butter, sugar, eggs, sweets, milk and cheese to name a few. People were also encouraged to mend their…

This week in History lessons, Year 5 and 6 students have been learning all about The Blitz that occurred during World War II. Did you know that there was a time when bombs were dropped on London for 8 days straight? People went to sleep in the Underground train stations in order to try to stay safe but many innocent people died. There were air raids from German planes all over Britain dropping bombs. Children were often evacuated and sent to the country towns where it was much safer for them. They could only take a small suitcase and had…

Year 6 Science

12th November 2018

In Year 6 Science, we have been learning about how bacteria and microorganisms can be both harmful and helpful. We learnt about Edward Jenner, who was a doctor who invented the first vaccine. He discovered that cowpox could prevent people from being infected with smallpox, which was a disease that was killing many people at the time. Brian explains… “Bacteria can be harmful because it can spread, kill people and infect people with diseases. Some bacteria can be helpful because it can help your stomach digest the food inside of it and some bacteria, such as cowpox, can cure an…
